Understanding the Basics of Your NDIS Plan
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to provide individualized funding for people living with a disability. However, understanding and using your plan effectively is key to getting the support you need.

What's in an NDIS Plan?
Each NDIS plan includes:
Participant Statement – Your personal situation and life goals.
Goals – Short- and long-term aims (e.g., living independently, improving social skills).
Budget Breakdown – How much funding you’ve received across three categories:
Core Supports – For daily living tasks
Capacity Building – To build skills and independence
Capital Supports – For assistive technology or home modifications
Understanding these elements helps you make informed decisions and avoid underusing or misusing your funds.
The Role of a Support Coordinator in Your Success
A Support Coordinator is your guide to navigating the system, especially if your plan is complex or your needs change frequently.
What Do They Do?
Break down your plan so you understand it
Connect you to providers and negotiate service agreements
Prepare you for reviews and documentation needs
Help during life transitions, crises, or emergencies
In South East Queensland, iKare Support Services offers expert coordination across the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads, and South Brisbane, helping clients maximize their outcomes.
Setting Meaningful and Achievable Goals
Your funding depends on your goals. The more clear, specific, and achievable they are, the better your plan will work for you.
SMART Goals = Better Funding
Set goals that are:
Specific: “Attend a weekly cooking class”
Measurable: “Walk 30 minutes daily with a support worker”
Achievable: “Get help with job-seeking 2x per week”
Relevant: Tied to your disability and life situation
Time-bound: “In the next 6 months…”
These goals justify the supports you're asking for and make plan reviews smoother.
Budgeting Wisely: Making the Most of Your Funds
Your NDIS plan has a fixed budget, so using it wisely ensures you receive support all year long.
Start with a Monthly Forecast
Create a 12-month spending plan with your support coordinator. Budgeting this way prevents overuse early on or underuse that affects future funding.
Month | Key Focus | Services Needed | Estimated Cost |
Jan | Social activities | Support Worker (2x/week) | $640 |
Feb | OT reassessment | OT + Reports | $850 |
Mar | Respite weekend | STA (2 days) | $1,400 |
Tips:
Use apps like MyNDIS or plan manager tools to track usage.
Request itemized service agreements.
Make sure providers charge within NDIS price caps.
Plan Management Options: What’s Right for You?
Management Type | Pros | Cons |
Self-Managed | Full control, use any provider | High admin burden |
Plan-Managed | Flexibility + admin support | Must find a plan manager |
NDIA-Managed | Easy admin, safety checks | Limited to registered providers |
If you're unsure which is best, speak with your support coordinator or contact NDIS for guidance.
Choosing the Right Providers
Not all providers offer the same quality. Choose based on experience, cultural fit, and reliability.
Questions to Ask:
Are they registered or reputable?
Can you choose your own support workers?
Do they give clear quotes and written agreements?
Are they flexible if your needs change?
Use the NDIS Provider Finder to compare local options in your area.
Navigating Reviews and Plan Changes
Your plan will be reviewed periodically—but you can also request changes if your circumstances shift.
Reasons to Request an Early Review:
Your needs increase (e.g., injury, illness, unsafe home)
You're not using your funds effectively
A key support is no longer available
What to Provide:
Updated reports (OT, psychologist, GP)
Progress logs from support workers
Support letters from family or advocates
Using Core Supports Effectively
Core supports cover your everyday needs. You can often move funds flexibly between:
Assistance with daily living (e.g., personal care, cooking)
Transport (e.g., taxi to appointments)
Social & community participation
Did you know? If you're feeling isolated or overwhelmed, your core budget can cover a support worker to accompany you to social outings or community events.

Maximizing Capacity Building Supports
These are long-term investments to help you build skills and independence.
Services You Can Fund:
Occupational therapy
Social skills coaching
Resume writing, job prep
Counselling and psychosocial support
Tip:
This is the category many participants underuse the most—yet it’s often the one that builds the greatest long-term change.

Capital Supports and Home Modifications
This part of your plan helps make your environment safe and functional.
You can fund:
Assistive technology (wheelchairs, hoists, speech devices)
Home modifications (ramps, railings, widened doors)
These require professional reports, your support coordinator can help organize this.
Leveraging Community and Mainstream Services
Not everything needs to come from NDIS. Queensland has many free or low-cost options, such as:
Libraries with accessible programs
Council-run exercise groups
State-based disability employment services
Mental health helplines
Ask your support coordinator to help blend NDIS and community supports to extend your budget.
Respite & STA: A Pathway to Safety
Short-Term Accommodation (STA) is often misunderstood, but it's one of the most flexible and useful Core supports.
What You Can Use It For:
Giving carers a break
Trying out new living arrangements
Temporary safety during housing crises
At iKare, we've supported participants in unsafe homes by using STA to bridge to MTA or SIL, especially in Gold Coast and Tweed.

Mental Health and Psychosocial Supports
NDIS recognizes psychosocial disability. You may qualify for:
Recovery Coaches
Therapy and behavior support
Mental health–trained support workers
These supports are especially important in rural or regional areas where access to services is limited.
iKare’s Local Support in Queensland
Key updates include:
Structured funding periods (e.g., quarterly/monthly disbursements)
New therapy pricing caps introduced July 1, 2025
Tougher provider compliance rules
More flexible review options

Final Checklist: Are You Maximizing Your Plan?
Do you know how your funds are divided?
Are you working toward your goals every month?
Are you using Core and Capacity Building supports fully?
Have you reviewed your providers and agreements recently?
Do you have someone (like iKare) helping you coordinate it all?
If not, it's time to act. Your NDIS plan is a tool, let’s use it to build the life you deserve.
